5'9". And I've had a history of being a bit over-weight at every stage in my life.

Your post sort of brings up things I've been thinking about. At this point, I feel like my endurance is pretty good. I mean, the 12 miles last night felt pretty good. My knees are a little sore today, and my quads feel a little loose. But overall, not too much pain. If I had a half-marathon to run in a week or two, with a good diet & hydration, keeping active and a little bit of Gu here and there, I think I could hammer it out. Not quite ready for the marathon yet, though.

Right now, I think I need to start putting a little more focus into toning. In particular, trying to lose fat around the lower abdomen region (flat tire) and maybe tone the upper body a bit. I'm still planning on losing a bit more weight - 5-10 lbs, probably. But right now, I think I'm in a good place regarding exercise.

So I guess I have two things:

1) Future exercise plans/goals: increase endurance by increasing distances, increase speed by casually working in a HIIT (high-intensity interval training) regimen, increase agility/balance (not sure how this one will work yet, but I do want to get quicker and more balanced for soccer and other fast-twitch activities)

2) Any advice on toning? I suppose I could read up on specific exercises and weights and what not, but assume for the time being that I am not planning on joining a gym and will likely do most/all of my exercise running and stuff outdoors. And my diet is probably pretty bare-bones and poor. I'm trying not to eat all the bad stuff (fast foods, too much fats, etc), but I'm probably not eating enough of the good stuff.

Please comment, question or suggest as you like. Thanks!

Not a lot in the way of exercise this past week, but did not eat as much.

if not planning on joining a gym, my suggestion is to check out a book by Ross Enamait called Never Gymless:
http://www.rosstraining.com/nevergymless.html

not that you have to work in all the exercises he outlines because he is a little more slanted to combat athletics...but he's fairly crafty for applying odd objects to workout routines. i bought the book and like it. 22 bucks plus shipping, he ships immediately so you'll get it within a couple days.

anyway, it might fit in with your toning.

The eating was pretty horrendous, and I had two late nights out on Friday and Saturday. Regardless, did make it out for a run and the beach on Sunday, so that was nice.

I'm finally done with the stress of moving and other things associated with it (well, not completely done, but it's starting to fade away), so I think I'm in a better place emotionally.

Meanwhile, my weight update:

4/13/2010: 167.2

Great job on not gaining weight with the stress!

I've not been getting very good sleep, and I've been eating like crazy. Plus, getting out and running has happened too seldomly.

So ...

4/27/2010: 174.4

4/29/2010: 170.2

One key thing I've learned - eating fast food or a rich breakfast usually leads to a decreased desire to eat better later on in the day.

I tried telling myself, "Ok, since you ate bacon, eggs, rice and hash browns for breakfast, you'd better stick to a salad & fruit for lunch and a small dinner." Unfortunately, come lunch time and dinner time, the desire to actually eat that is diminished. So, I've made it a point to stick to yogurt & granola and bagels in the morning. While I could eat more, I generally find that it fills me up just enough. So, I'm good.

Yesterday, besides eating a blueberry bagel (no cream cheese) and a low-fat yogurt + granola, I ate some veggie chips (~200 cal), another couple yogurt/granola at dinner, and split a spicy ahi (tuna) bowl over lunch and dinner (which includes rice and spicy ahi - I ate it with nori [seaweed], so it was like sushi for lunch and dinner). I also ran during lunch for about 3 miles, so it was a good day, overall.

Evidently, things haven't gotten much better. Sometime in June, I hit a hard wall and just ending up eating like crazy with not a whole lot of exercise. So, I'm repeating my past mistakes at the beginning of 2010.

7/7/2010: 182.2

So, here we go again. I feel as though having the accountability of my weight on the AO helps me keep it in check. Otherwise, it's just me and my willpower, which I've learned over the past few months, is virtually nil when it comes to food and other sensations.

As far as goals go, I'm looking for low-170's by August and hopefully crack back into the 160's sometime.
