10/4/2011: 193.0

Bad news: 10 minutes into the game, went in hard for a tackle and came out of it with a strained/torn MCL. :/ Got it X-rayed, no broken bones. MRI on Tuesday to check how bad the injury is. Hoping that it's just a slight tear and I'll be back to action soon. But likely will be out for a month or so. Semi-good news - the weight hasn't ballooned up quite that much. But I'm guessing it's mostly because muscle is turning into fat. :/

3/19/2012: 188.2 (Beginning of AOBL)
This is surprising, especially after the past weekend of unadulterated eating. Went to Maui for a quick weekend and lived it up. Despite the hurt knee, still made it down to the gym a couple times and worked out upper body. It's a familiar pain, but thankfully, I got a sweat in. So, it's something.

3/19/2012: 188.2 (Beginning of AOBL)
3/26/2012: 188.2 Did not break a sweat in the past week, and starting to get into the bad eating habits again. Trying to stay conscious of what I'm eating and limiting the bad stuff, because my knee will keep me out for a while. It's official - found out I have a torn MCL, slight tear in the ACL and more general wear-and-tear in the right knee. Missed out on two soccer games, two kickball games and Warrior Dash as a result. Just gotta rest it up, get it rehabbed and hopefully back at it in a few weeks.

3/19/2012: 188.2 (Beginning of AOBL)
3/26/2012: 188.2 4/2/2012: 186.8 This confuses me. I've been eating terribly and still not managing to get out and break a sweat. The nice thing is, I'd estimate my knee is back to about 50-60%. Walking is no problem, running I'm a little hesitant on, and I've been trying to avoid explosive-type activities (i.e., jumping, soccer, kickball, etc). I can handle a bike for 10 mins (knee-wise - cardio is another story). I really want to get back out there. If you're reading this, take care of your body - try as best as possible not to injure yourself. It's tough not giving in once you don't have the option of exercise.

The entirety of AOBL was spent in the 190 region, and was threatening to get back to 200. Scary stuff. My knee finally started to cooperate, and the nearby 24 Hour Fitness is back to having their showers in place, so I've got no reason to skimp on the fitness. I've tried to hit the ground running (pun sorta intended), so I'm back to trying to get 2 workouts a day in. Soccer season's done, but I'm trying to play at least one pickup game every day/night. Putting together the gym, soccer and running with gf, I'm making slow strides to get back in shape. Managed to run 4 1/2 miles continuously on Saturday morning, which is probably the first time I've run that long a distance continuously in almost a year. So, back to the weight bit: 6/4/2012: 189.6 The next week will likely be a blip - a trip to NYC this week will likely add a few pounds. But looking forward to playing more soccer to work it off!

I've found that I have a new challenge this time around. When I first lost the weight (see first 200 posts or so), I pushed myself to challenges and feats I'd never done before. So part of the work was actually spurned on by excitement of the unknown. This time, though, I have to fight the "back in the day" demon. The first time I was sidelined for 3 weeks with an injury (later deduced it was likely gout), I tried running 4 miles continuously at the same pace I would've normally. At that point, I'd basically avoided exercise for the better part of 3 months. I managed to tweak my knee and end up with another week or two out. All too often, it's too easy to think back and wonder, "How did I ever managed to eek out a half-marathon in just over two hours, and here I am, struggling to piece together a 2 mile run continuously?" I think it's good to remember where I came from, and in the long run, aim to be better than that, because I think it's possible. But when it creeps into the short run by dictating your individual workouts (like saying, "I ran 13.1 miles at a 9 1/2 min pace, I can certainly do 4 miles if I push hard enough"), then I think the adverse effects can be rough.

Wow, page 5? Fell pretty far off the bandwagon.
7/23/2012: 189.8 That date marks the beginning of a one-month (?) challenge. Gf and I both took the "before" picture, so we'll see what the after looks like. Been keeping up with the gym & running, so I have developed a bit more muscle than before. Ability to run around has been slowly improving, though with my priority being soccer, I should spend more time doing cardio-type stuff. Unfortunately, Monday also marked the day that I got my ankle taken out during pick-up soccer. Just when I started getting back on the horse, I fell off again. And to make matters worse, I stepped wrong on Tuesday night while hobbling on my left foot and my knee started feeling the pain on Wednesday - more so than my foot, even. After the torn MCL, I was worried that the pain felt very similar, but that it was on the outside of my knee, which is where the ACL is. (Much harder to come back from, and almost always needs surgery.) So far, so good, though - I haven't tried running, but two days on the elliptical w/out incident, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the best. Foot's still sore, so I'm probably out of serious running & soccer for at least another week. Ah well.
