Default Old Hard Drives

Quote:
The lesson for PC users? Old hard drives don't always die--or fade away. Often they are salvaged and reused in other computers. And when that happens, the data and sometimes-grimy secrets of previous users go with them.
A little scary. I think the next time I get rid of my PC I'll just melt the hard drive rather than risk someone retrieving my old tax returns.

Just take a big magnet to it. You, at the very least, get an excuse to buy a huge magnet and they are a lot of fun to play with.

I have 2 old cpus I want to get rid of. What is the cheapest, quickest way to physically destroy the hard drives - I can't destroy the data using some software b/c I don't even have a monitor or keyboard to see what I'm doing. (only have laptop now) Just want to take out the hard drive and pour some easily found chemical on it or something. Any suggestions?

Take apart the hard drive with a screw driver. Remove the magnetic disk. Cut it into 200 pieces with a scissors and mail each piece to a different country. Make absolutely sure there is no return address on the envelopes.

That will not work. There are only 192 countries in the world.

My apologies. I was including each of the other planets as it's own country as well.

No. I'm excluding Pluto but including the recently discovered "10th planet".

Or you could send that 200th piece to the penguin preserve on Pluto.
