Default Americans spend more than they make

we've now attained the ultimate [with] the whole country managing to spend more money than we earn

Perhaps it's time the goverment to set the example.

I wonder if it's quite as bad as it's made out to be.
Does this statistic consider the tax-deferred portion of people's compensation?
401(k) contributions do not show up in income statistics, for example. So somebody could have cash flow of -.5%, but be socking away 10% tax deferred.

We're all in-hock to the company store, but today the store isn't owned by the same company. It pretty much affects us the same way, for practical purposes.

More hours, more spouses working (in addition to 1st spouse), higher productivity, lower family incomes. Welcome to republican heaven.

We spend more than we earn, yet somehow, our total savings as a nation grows. Funny how that works.

Our debt sure grows, however.
