It depends what kind it is, but for the most part I'd say it's a meal. Soups that have lots of stuff in them, like vegetable soup, really fill me up!

Both the first and second option.

It's a valid light meal, and makes a good lunch. It can be a good salad substitute at dinner. There isn't a lot of caloric difference between a bowl of clear soup and the salad served at most restaurants (with dressing, croutons, etc.)

Soup is a side that goes along well with a small sandwich. The only exception to this is a thick chowder which can be eaten as a meal with a piece of bread, something that is the equivalent of chili.

WITH LOTS OF BREAD, OR IN A BREAD BOWL = A MEAL.

OTHERWISE, IT'S JUST THE EQUIVALENT OF A HOT DRINK.

Depends on the soup. Something with a thin, clear broth like chicken noodle or beef with vegetable needs a supplement to make it a meal, like a lot of bread or something. But the thick soups, like pea, black bean, lentil, chowder, bisque, pasta fagioli. . ., are a main course. Of course, just like a steak, even a thick soup is a nicer meal with something else for contrast, like a piece of fruit, or a salad, or a slice of cornbread.
