Default A Slip Of The Tongue

Quote:
Lenihan had been heaping praise on Rice, who has frequently said she aspires to run the NFL one day but has more recently ruled out seeking to replace retiring Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.
"She's been chancellor of Stanford," Lenihan said on the air. "She's got the patent resume of somebody that has serious skill. She loves football. She's African-American, which would kind of be a big coon. A big coon. Oh my God. I am totally, totally, totally, totally, totally sorry for that."
He said he had meant to say "coup" instead of the racial slur.
KTRS listeners soon began calling the station to complain. Twenty minutes after the utterance, Dorsey went on the air to apologize to Rice and KTRS listeners.
"There can be no excuse for what was said," Dorsey said. "Dave Lenihan has been let go. ... There is enough hate. We certainly are not going to fan those flames."
NAACP chapter president Harold Crumpton commended Dorsey for his swift action.
Is the word "coon" used as a slur any more? Is seems so 50 years ago.

Given the context, I don't think he did anything wrong. Especially since he caught the slip and appologized immediately.

That is pretty funny - until the part where the guy gets fired. This should have been something to laugh about and move on, not a firing offense. Would have been nice for the NAACP to say "It was a mistake, he apologized, no biggie", but that wouldn't get them a pelt to hang on the wall.

He probably would have been better off had he never gone back and called attention to the fact that he said "coon". Might have slipped right by.

Wow. Getting fired for a slip of the tongue. I think people are taking the need to be politically correct a little too far. I mean, now our mistakes have to be PC. Especially given the fact that he was saying good things about her in the sentences prior. I think it was obvious he meant no slur.

Then again, Freud might disagree.

Knowing that he'd only held the job for a couple of weeks makes it more understandable, but yeah, I think firing him was an overreaction.

You can only get away with those slips if you're the senior Senator from West Virginia.

Fired for a consonant. That's pretty bad.

"She's African-American, which would kind of be a big coup"

What would that mean anyway?
