Neither I nor my coworkers can reach casact.org (216.109.67.144) when we're here at work. We get the AACRAO (216.109.67.131) web site instead. Did the CAS recently change its web address? (The more I know what the problem is, the better I can steer the people at our help(less) desk to finding the answer and getting it fixed.)

I have it! What can I do to help you get there?

I can get there from home just fine, too. Whatever the problem is, it's more complex than I thought a few minutes ago. If I type http://216.109.67.131 into the address bar, up pops the AACRAO website. But typing http://216.109.67.144 into the address bar returns the ever popular 404 error page.

I guess I know there's some way I am supposed to be able to find the numerical address of a site I am on - if you tell me how to do that I can find out if casact.org moved.

We do have a name server, and my suspicion was that it was the problem. But since the direct IP approach (numbers instead of names) doesn't work, that isn't the problem (or at least not all of it), and I can't imagine what the problem might be.
Flora: Get to a DOS prompt and type: PING http://www.CASACT.ORG The first line of output should say something like: Pinging http://www.casact.org [206.109.67.144] with 32 bytes of data. If you get a different number in the brackets, I'd like to know about it. |

Here's my PING output:

I can get to "www.casact.org" just fine, but get the 404 when I put in "216.109.67.144". If I put in the number you give for AACRAO, I get to their website. Maybe the CAS is doing something funny with their IP. [ This Message was edited by: PseudolusCAS on 2001-11-08 14:01 ] |
