Default Stupid public schools

-- A Kentucky school superintendent says he's proud of the Russell County High School students who recited the Lord's Prayer at Friday's graduation ceremony.

Earlier in the day, a federal judge had banned prayers from the ceremony in response to a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. But during the principal's opening remarks, about 200 students prayed aloud, drawing thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the crowd.

Associated Press reports the "revival-like atmosphere" continued when graduate Megan Chapman shared during her opening remarks that God had guided her since childhood. Chapman, who said the challenge by the ACLU unified the entire senior class, was interrupted several times by cheering as she urged her classmates to trust in God as they go through life, says the report.

"More glory went to God because of something like that than if I had just simply said a prayer like I was supposed to," she said.

So inappropriate. Why not hold a revival meeting elsewhere if that is what you want. Don't misunderstand me: The opening remarks are fine. The group prayer could be in violation of the court order, but perhaps not, since it was evidentally not led. (Of course, someone led it and planned it - it was NOT spontaneous.)

Someone was technically left out of the prayers since the ACLU sued on their behalf. You'd think such good Christian people would consider the feelings of others. Oh well.

Disobeyed a lawful court order.

To paraphrase a basic rightie line (oft used in illegal immigrant or drug law discussions): They broke the law and are criminals. They should be locked up and in jail. If the law is bad, fine. Change the law. But until then, it's criminal and they must be prosecuted.

I doubt that they disobeyed the court order. Usually, the court orders are in regards to the part of the program planned by the school - the school can't say "We're going to pray to Jesus now". For the students to do it on their own - planned or spontaneous (yeah, right) - is not covered by the court order. That's generally how these cases have been, I didn't read the story on this one, so maybe I'm wrong about what happened.

What did the court order say? If it told the school officials not to sanction a prayer, and the kids did one anyway, then no law (or even court order) was broken, just a school rule. Give 'em detention.

It doesn't matter - more glory went to God this way so everyone is happy.

Sounds to me like this was a student action similar to student civil rights demonstrations of old, but even less loud and violent. They didn't even try to coerce anyone into saying the LP, did they? Personally, I think this is MAAN (much ado...), but I do have to laugh that this riles anyone.
