Default Is this the right thing to do...?

Suppose you know that someone is receiving housing vouchers (which pay their rent from government funds) and is breaking the rules of those vouchers by also housing another person in their apartment. The other person has lived there for months, and it is easily verifiable, as they have the electric account in their name for a long time (several months) because the person actually on the lease (and receiving the free rent) owes the electric company so much money they can't open an account in their own name.

Is it right to send a letter to the housing authority notifying them of this transgression? It would likely result in the recission of eligibility for the housing vouchers. The person receiving the vouchers gets them because they are bipolar and does not have any children that would be affected.

It's coming out of the public treasury, so it's his tax dollars being wrongly and fraudulently collected.

Is this just someone you know? Or someone you would call a friend?

If it's just an acquaintance, I'd say MYOB. If it's a friend, I'd say you could say something to the friend one time that the arrangement is pick a word: illegal, immoral, against the rules, whatever and that he might want to think about making a change. But then MYOB.

Assuming there are only adults in question, no kids are involved, it's really none of your business. Eventually the housing people will catch up with them and they will suffer the consequences.

Yeah, I guess so. I wouldn't object to a letter to the housing authority, but I probably wouldn't bother with it either.

What good would you expect to come of reporting it?

E.g., if the second person moved out, so the bipolar person retained eligibility for housing vouchers, is that a good result? Is that the result you would expect?

If you do it, make sure you call yourself a whistle-blower so you can receive the hero status that comes with it.

How much money needs to be stolen before you think it should be reported?
