Default Remember when liberals were Capitalist?

I don't but I heard they use to be.

Minimum wage: If only most Americans understood

Thursday, August 3, 2006
David R. Henderson

"The Right Minimum Wage: $0.00." So read an editorial headline in one of the most respected newspapers in America. The editorial stated: "There's a virtual consensus among economists that the minimum wage is an idea whose time has passed. Raising the minimum wage by a substantial amount would price working poor people out of the job market." Can you guess the newspaper? The Wall Street Journal, perhaps? Right city; wrong paper. This editorial appeared on Jan. 14, 1987, in the New York Times.

More recently, the Times has called for further increases in the minimum wage. At the federal level, many Democrats and some Republicans are pushing to raise the minimum wage from its current level of $5.15 an hour. Moreover, initiatives on the ballot in 10 states would increase the minimum wage.

Perhaps you are referring, not to "liberals", but that liberal bulwark of the press-The New York Times? At one time, the NYT was a highly regarded newspaper for its journalism (a concept that has been FUBARed over time), whose slogan was "All the News Fit to Print". As I recall, the NYT still held to that standard in 1987. No more. I hope someday the NYT recovers its excellence.

Is it the NYT you disagree with or the editorials?

They don't know. They hear Rush talking about the liberal bias of the NYT so now it's a rightocrat calling card to cry about NYT like this.

Have you checked out the New York Sun? for a small paper it's pretty good.

And since I don't listen to Rush, I have to read what he says here from you in order to know what to believe. So the NYTimes is evil? Thanks!

Surprisingly, when I tried to find the editorial at nytimes.com, their search engine couldn't find it.

When I used Google, I found it easily.

Since it's only available to subscribers, I've posted it to my website so you moochers can read it for free.

Frankly, I disagree with the editorial, and the Times' assertion of a "virtual consensus among economists" is 100% wrong. There is considerable disagreement whether, in the real world, higher minimum wages slow job growth.

Logically, anything which follows "virtual consensus among economists" must be true.

In the "real world" there are a lot of morons.
