These are notes that outline my MLC Seminar. They are not meant to be all inclusive study material, but rather a very abbreviated version of the material that will be on the exam. In the seminar we discuss the notes in much detail, and I will help you develop intuition with the material so that you are not just memorizing formulas.

(03/23/2007): Uploaded new version of Life Contingencies notes
Changes to the new version of LC notes:
1) Moved Multiple Life and Contingent Probabilities to earlier in the notes so that relevant actuarial notation can be introduced earlier
2) Changed notation for PVRV's to match actuarial notation
3) Corrected a few typos

Although this may exist elsewhere, I haven't seen it. The SOA 157 sample questions were just old posted exam questions. This is a pdf file that matches the problems. It should be clear how to read the file. For example, the file indicates problem number 49 from the SOA 157 sample questions is the same as number 24 from the November 2002 exam, whereas problem number 95 from the SOA 157 sample questions is no longer being tested on MLC.

The second file indicates some differences between the two groups of problems.

This is the notes I used for Fall 2007 sitting of CAS 3 exam. Given the volume of materials on CAS 3, I find understanding concepts more important than memorizing formulas and facts. Therefore, my notes are written in a way that it deemphasizes memorization and develops understanding of concepts. For example there are many proofs and intuition to understanding equations that help me in deriving formulas from basic principles during an exam. If you have a good memory, flashcard is a good alternative. This should cover all materials on the new 3L and 3F exams.

I used this to help memorize things. I did one similar for P (two pages) and FM (two pages) - as opposed to 11 pages for this MLC sheet. I've distributed it around my office so it has been reviewed and corrected -as you can see it's in its 19th "edition"; however, I'm not sure it's 100% error free. Mostly, I'm just thrilled that I will never ever have to look at it again. However, I'll be doing the same for Exam C in the fall.

I found that it was very helpful to prepare this "cheat pamphlet" - it contains basically all the formulas that I tended to forget when working problems. It covered a decent number of problems on the test, but it's by no means exhaustive.

TeX is pretty nice for preparing stuff like this - I like the lifecon package: Style file, and here is the User's Guide.

How on earth do you get started in TeX? I'm trying to use LEd, but it's just too much and I don't have enough time to learn this on my own. I just want to use the lifecon package.

I can make a basic pdf file with TeX, and I understand the command, but I just don't know where to put lifecon.sty. Thanks for the help!
