McWhorter is largely right, although I think he's a little tough on Obama.* Obama has some leadership experience outside of politics.
Much of what McWhorter wrote could also be said about the Republicans who talk about Rice as a potential presidential candidate. * In the interest of full disclosure: I attended Columbia at the same time as Obama (he was two years ahead of me). If I met him, he didn't leave any lasting impression.

True, but so do virtually all freshman Senators (they managed to get elected, after all), and they don't get touted as Presidential.

Likewise, I've heard speculation from Republicans about running Rice as a presidential candidate -- especially against Hillary Clinton. So long as we're in the realm of "people in their respective parties are buzzing about their presidential potential," I think the same things McWhorter wrote about Obama are equally true of Rice, and they're just as appropriate to say about her since neither of them are presidential contenders (except in the minds of some of their fellow party members).

I will gladly admit that I want the first black president to be a conservative R - but I wouldn't compromise on who I think would be better for the job just to have a black pres. I think most conservatives who like Rice would have the same opinion.
