Default Need recommendations for a good stay-in-touch web page

Are there good ways for a widely dispersed extended family to use the Web to stay in touch, such as posting pictures, reporting family events/milestones, etc? My parents and siblings are all over the country and we rarely see each other. Email definitely helps but it's not enough. I feel I barely know my nieces and nephews. I'm vaguely aware of MySpace and Facebook but not sure they're what I'm looking for. What if anything are others using for this purpose? Thanks.

Set up your own forum. Not sure how but I had a friend who did that.

you could start a blog that requires registration to post at or view. that way you could control who is on it.

Look into creating a Yahoo Group. It is like a mini AO that you can make private so only members can access the pages. There is a forum, place to post pictures, etc. You can set it up so that every time someone posts a new message you get an email, or you can turn it off so you only view what is in the user group.

I'm surprised people act as if there is a better choice.

This is what I was going to suggest...and you can use Yahoo! IM for real-time chatting. Other sites (like MSN) have similar capabilities...

My extended family uses Yahoo groups, and we're scattered through out the world. It works really well. The only work is to get peopl to sign up, and to load all the relevant dates for reminders, e.g. birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
