Okay, I am attempting to redo my survey as the other one has been found to be defective.
Please use this thread instead of the other one from this point on. Summary: Smoking is going to be banned in all restaurants and bars at the end of this month. Is this a good or bad idea? |

I think the smoking ban in non-smoking areas within bars and restaurants should be more strongly enforced.
I also think that every bar should have a non-smoking area and a smoking area (preferably outdoors). |

When I lived in Vermont, smoking was banned in restaurants, not bars. If the restaurant had a bar, there had to be a clear division between the two. There was some loss of restaurant revenue; Vermont voters felt it was worth it.

I was going to quote something from the initial thread and post a reply here, but can't, since the initial thread's been locked!
Anyway ... Regarding BB's comment about the law being passed to protect the health of the people who work in bars ... Couldn't the same argument be made for people who work in smoke shops (I don't know what the official name is for where people go to smoke cigars and such). What about miners, who have to breathe in all kinds of carcinogens as a part of their job? I wonder if you could call this an "occupational hazard", i.e., people are going to go to bars to drink and smoke, so shouldn't you expect second-hand smoke exposure if you work there? If you don't want it, work in a non-smoking restaurant instead. (Gawd, I can't believe I'm actually defending smokers today. )

You know 42, I don't really care what the reason is. I am just happy that I will be able to go to a bar and not come out with my clothes and hair smelling like smoke.

I don't think we should tell a privately owned institution what it can and can't allow within its confines. However, I reserve the right not to frequent said establishment if I don't care for the smoking.

I'm with Franny. I also want to know before I enter if smoking is allowed. Life is easier if it's banned everywhere.
"We have a smoking section. It's called The Sidewalk." |
