OK. To recap.
1. Chartered Underwriter designations are well respected. The exams are not trivial, and the syllabus has some overlap with items on the actuarial exams. They are easier to pass than actuarial exams. This does NOT mean that the people who take them are not as intelligent as actuaries. 2. CPCU and CLU designations generally have a very positive impact on an underwriting career, and in many organizations, on a management career in general. 3. The CPCU designation deals with Property and Casualty lines, and the CLU designation deals with life lines. The value of each depends on where you work and what lines you deal with. 4. These designations are secondary issues in an actuarial career. They might be useful if you concentrate on pricing, and work closely with underwriting. They could be useful if you ultimately aspire to a position that manages actuaries and underwriters both. But they are non-essential to an actuary, and any pursuit of them should in no way impede your actuarial exam progress. (BTW, it's been a long time since I worked anywhere that paid much attention to LOMA exams, but my understanding when I did work at such a place is that they were EXTREMELY basic. Not at all on a par with the underwriting exams. Basically a good move for people just starting out who wanted a very simple overview of how the insurance industry works. But its been a long time since I paid attention, so I could be wrong in my perceptions.) |

LOMA is basic overview for those new to insurance. (I started taking them because my co paid LOMA bonuses, 0 for actuarial exams.)
CLU (similar to CPCU) is more advanced, respected, secondary to ASA/FSA. ChFC is a bit above CLU.

I thought ChFC vs CLU was just a financial vs insurance distinction, not that one is above the other.
