New thread for exam since I registered for it yet again.
January 29, 2021 at 12:14 am #2900I just registered myself! Good luck! What study resources are you using? I’m just reading Warner & Modlin and using the posted past exams.
January 30, 2021 at 11:44 pm #2939thinking of taking the exam, but haven’t looked much into the material besides some sample study material. It seems like the exam is unlike any previous exams that required calculus and all, and it seems to be some tough book keeping exercise. Am I wrong in this?
January 31, 2021 at 1:50 am #2942No youre not wrong. Youre just doing basic math for the most part
January 31, 2021 at 10:11 pm #2949Is the challenging part of the test then is the memorization of the bookkeeping techniques, or what is the main challenge to this exam? Many thanks.
January 31, 2021 at 11:53 pm #2951I don’t think bookkeeping is the correct word to use. But I think the most challenging part is to be able to apply the appropriate techniques very quickly, while dealing with any tricky situations they try to give you. There are also open ended questions as well that don’t involve any math so there is some analysis or interpretation of what you are looking, identifying reasons why something is the way it is or just knowing some lists of things.
February 1, 2021 at 6:35 am #2960From my view, the exam tries to mimic a simplified condition. It provides all necessary information and want to know how do you handle it.
Ratemaking&Reserve estimate. Former gives past related data and you need to price it based on the given data. You need to make too many adjustments before calculating the rate. The most important thing is that you must give a reason about why you make these adjustments. The reserve part also require you justify you chosen reserve estimate.
February 1, 2021 at 3:17 pm #2981I’m using both Bedford and Infinite Actuary, it’s my 8th attempt at this exam. Syllabus hasn’t changed so I’m going to keep trying to pass it maybe one sitting I will.
February 1, 2021 at 3:38 pm #2986Is anyone struggling to schedule exam for May 2021 at Pearson center? I can’t schedule mine in any of the testing centers in my radius so I contacted the CAS about it.
February 1, 2021 at 3:50 pm #2990I can’t schedule mine either and also emailed them. Very frustrating.
February 1, 2021 at 6:49 pm #3021@actuarymelissa: Wow 8th sitting… how do you keep motivating yourself since you are studying the same material over and over again?
February 1, 2021 at 6:53 pm #3022@actuarymelissa, I’m sorry to hear that. I’m now officially 0/7 on fellowship exams (across all 3), the most I’ve failed is 3 individually. This process is beginning to damage me financially as well and I’m not sure how much longer I’m gonna last. What keeps you motivated to keep going if you don’t mind me asking?
February 1, 2021 at 6:54 pm #3023I am struggling to schedule a Pearson Vue appointment as well and emailed the CAS to see what authority they may have. Best I could get was Fargo, ND, on a Saturday nonetheless and I live near the Twin Cities in MN.
February 1, 2021 at 7:01 pm #3024I guess it’s the exam strategy, I’ve complained to CAS over the years but they don’t care. Now since we can’t talk about exam questions or get examiners reports anymore not going to even now how exam graded or what they want from me now.
February 1, 2021 at 7:04 pm #3025I’m stuck where I’m at until I pass Exam 5 and 6U but I refused to do 6U until I pass Exam 5. I mean I can’t really advance since where I work requires the CAS membership by statute. Technically this approach throws out real experience and talent when all you care about is exams and credentials rather look than look at merits and experience.
February 1, 2021 at 7:06 pm #3027Do you normally finish the exam when you fail?
