I remember speaking to a mentor a few years ago who told me he was grading one of the fellowship exams (Exam 8 I think). He was asking the committee why they demanded a certain response to get credit (it was some typical BS) and told me he asked, “Haven’t these people proven they’re serious about the actuarial profession by this point?”
Af this point, the fail report issue is a moot point given that the CAS no longer releases questions. Not sure how the SOA handles that. Also, I’m not sure how much it mattered before because you never got your paper back anyway so it’s not like you know what your response was.
SOA in general (as I understand it) has a much more competent education process run by trained educators and I assume that their exam committee would be more competent as well. I would expect the SOA pass rates to be higher given how well thought out their exams are. The CAS on the other hand – don’t even get me started. You have to bear with me – I’ve been in the pipeline for 10+ years and this seems like a never-ending nightmare. At the end of the day, I can’t walk away empty handed though so I plan on hanging in there.
I lied. I just checked the SOA website and their fellowship exams from October/November get results on 1/15.
That last response was meant for a different thread and I can’t seem to delete it. Sorry about that.
The syllabus hasn’t changed so there should be no difference between 2020 and 2021.
The syllabus hasn’t changed so it shouldn’t matter.
I was just watching the recording of the Fall Meeting recognition ceremony. They had Chuck Norris and Daymond John (from Shark Tank) give a shoutout to the new designees. That was pretty cool.
You can edit but I’ve found that after you edit twice, it disables your ability to edit again. I really miss everything about the old Outpost! No idea why they did away with it.
I heard the SOA is releasing their results the last week in February. I guess the CAS isn’t lagging behind from an industry perspective. Either way, still not sure why results couldn’t have been ready next week.
I agree. The material is so straightforward and they go out of their way to twist things to the point where the questions are often defective.
But then more people would have FCAS. The CAS can’t allow that to happen!
It’s up to you but BKM carries around 35% weight on the syllabus so you may want to get the text.
To Olmstead: all I’m saying is that becoming an FCAS doesn’t make you some superior being.
To Tigger: regardless, the only consequences are for the students. There’s never any for the CAS board, committees etc.. That was my main point.
I beg to differ. No FCAS is superior to me as a person. Alot of them suck at their jobs and are just good test takers. From my experience, others are jerks. Dont let them make you feel inferior.
You have to remember that the CAS operates in the best interest of the CAS and their committees. They’ll always go with the most expedient or convenient option that suits them. The students have to accept it. That’s the power of an oligopoly. Theres no recourse for bad decision-making or incompetence. They know they have something the students want and that’s why they get away with this behavior year in, year out. Its quite unfortunate if you ask me.
